Under standing the subtle differences between a local move and a long distance move will make your entire moving experience easier. A long distance move is one generally over 100 miles from the point of origin. Once the long distance threshold is reached, a few differences in pricing kick in along with other pricing issues. Pricing the move

The overall price that you receive from your salesperson is arrived at by considering a few factors. Weight is the primary factor while distance, location access and mitigating circumstances such as winding stairs and elevator time are also considered. If you have a large home or amount of goods to move the number of boxes used can also be a price consideration. You may feel the need to hold yard sales or use other methods to pair down the total volume and weight of the move.

Understanding your rights and obligations

One of the more important items that you should pay attention to before your move is the contract arrangements. There are quite a few state and federal statutes in place to protect you and your goods but knowing them and your carriers’ reputation are still critical. There are some carriers that are less then reputable operating between states. Be sure you read your legal rights, but also ask for references. There have been far too many instances where the homeowner has been left out in the cold because of a dishonest carrier. The paperwork is there for you as well as them so be sure you know where you stand.

Crossing state lines

If your move involves crossing a state line the federal government has strict rules that apply. Bill of lading documents will stipulate your rights and tariff charges. You have the right to inspect all documents. It is very wise to take advantage of this opportunity so that excess fees are not tacked onto your bill unexpectedly.
